PHOTOSHOP
For my magazine advert, I included margins of around 0.3cm around the entire advert as I wanted to include a border for my advert as this is a convention used by many artists so I felt this would stand out to my target audience. I then adjusted my image of my artist which I selected again with the rectangular marquee tool and resized it to my margins using CTRL-ALT-T and holding shift so the image wouldn’t be stretched and when I removed the margins, there would be an even white border around the entire magazine advert. I chose my artist image with the side profile as again this provides a sense of ambiguity and I feel this would intrigue my target audience as it doesn’t fully reveal who the artist is so it may provoke them to research her and look at her products which is beneficial in promoting the artist and building her profile. This also has a clear connection to my music video as it shows the stained glass window in the background and the song is featured on the advert. I adjusted the lighting slightly on my image by selecting image-adjustments-brightness/contrast as the contrast against the border was too different and brightening the image conveyed a more effective and well-made element in my product which are aspects that are likely to stand out to my target audience. Another technology I used was the text tool which I used to varying sizes but still continued to use the Avenir Next Bold font as I felt this bold font stood out well against my background which I placed accordingly around my image and at the bottom of the advert which is a conventional placement for this type of information (such as the songs featured and the release date). To get the twitter symbol, I took an image from the internet (using Google), saved it, inserted it, used the pain bucket tool and main the logo white and dragged it to my advert. This will promote the artist and show a clear link throughout our research and planning which will build up her artist profile as this is the twitter myself and Steph created for the artist. The technologies used establish the professional aspect of my magazine advert allowing me to fit conventions of real media products.
I used Photoshop on my Mac to create both of my digipaks and magazine advert. To create my digipak, I followed a template and then inserted the images I took a few days before and cropped them accordingly. Using the rectangular marquee tool, I then dragged them into the template and re-sized them used CTRL-ALT-T whilst holding shift to ensure the image wouldn’t be stretched and upheld the best quality to re-establish the professional element in my products. I adjusted the lighting and contrast on each of the images to varying extents to ensure the lighting differences between the photos was subtle and unnoticeable to the audience. I did this by selecting the image, going onto the option images at the top of the screen, adjustments and then brightness/contrast. Another editing aspect I did on on of my digipaks is how I adjusted the opacity of the image of my artist and had the dancers behind her. I did this by double clicking the image, going onto blending options and adjusting the opacity to 60%. I felt this was effective as it provides a sense of ambiguity as the dancer’s aren’t shown in much detail and there was no clarification of why they are included and who they are. This would make the target audience more likely to research the artist (which will be beneficial in the promotion of the singer as she is a small artist) and watch her music video in order to learn why these two girls were shown on the digipak. Another element I edited on my digipak was using a colour overlay on my stained glass window design on the top left of the digipak. To do this I double clicked the images, went onto the colour overlay section, chose from my colour palette the colour of the lipstick (using the eyedropper tool) which is a pink colour and is the colour of some of my text, changed the blend mode to soft light and adjusted this to 59%. This made the overall colour scheme of my digipak work much more effectively as the original image didn’t include the purple lights so it stood out to myself personally and I felt it looked unprofessional. Using the same image in a separate tab, I dragged another image of my artist to this tab in order to create a stained glass window effect. I had the stained glass window as the base layer and I adjusted the opacity of the image of the artist in order to seethe pattern behind this. Then using the magnetic lasso tool, I edited the sections of the stained glass window out simply by outlining them all individually and using backspace to remove this. Once I had finished this, I used the same tool to outline the entire stained glass window leaving me with the image of my artist made into a stained glass window design with her image as the base of this window. This was then dragged to my digipak and put in whichever section I chose to place it in leaving the background behind white to stand out. This clearly fitted my approach for my digipak as it included both my artist and the stained glass window theme which is a clear and effective introduction to my featured music video. The text I used throughout my digipak was Avenir Next Bold and used a variety of sizes depending on the importance and attention I felt that text had yet was still readable. My legal information on the back of the digipak as well as the CDNP number was influenced by myself using the search engine Google in order to fit the conventions of real media products. I felt this overall establishes the professional and effective aspect of my digipak and these technologies allowed myself to adapt the product in a way that would suit my target audience and fit the indie genre.
